Under section 62(1) of the Companion Animals Act 1998, animals seized under the authority of that Act, must cause the seized animal to be delivered as soon as possible to its owner, to a Council pound or to any approved premises.
Under section 62A(1) of the Companion Animals Act 1998, an approved premise is any premises (other than a Council pound) operated by an approved person.
If you have found a lost dog, Council encourages citizens to contact an approved premise. An authorised person at the approved premise will scan the dog for a microchip and facilitate re-uniting the dog with its owner. This process minimises the stress placed on the dog by reducing the time it is away from its owner.
Citizens may also contact Council's Customer Service Centre on 9335 2222. Council's citizens' service staff will require an accurate description of the dog and the location where the dog was found. If you have contained the dog please ensure you have provided adequate water and shelter. Council officers will not enter premises to collect dogs unless the premises are occupied by the resident.
Marrickville Council officers will endeavour to collect stray and lost dogs between 9am and 3pm Monday - Friday (except public holidays when an officer may not be available). All attempts to reunite lost dogs with their owners are taken before the dog is transported to Council's Animal Impounding Facility.
